What College and Higher Education Will Look Like In The Future?

With the increasing avenues of technology and internet capabilities, the world has become a global village of innovation, convenience, and interconnection. From our workplace to our personal communications, everything has been digitalized – now exceedingly apparent that we live in an era where technology has taken over our lives. With all these advancements, the education sector will soon progress by leaps and bounds. The future of higher education and college looks bright and promising, but quite different than traditional infrastructures, in this advanced internet era.

Many colleges have already started providing online training and course study for their students who find it difficult to get themselves enrolled in a proper physical college system. Even for students at traditional university institutions, all lectures and presentations are recorded – with students often consuming such material in the leisure of their home or local coffee shop. Countless colleges across the globe are educating such students virtually.

Nowadays, with such modern invention, anyone with a stable internet connection and a willingness to study, can pursue their education. This trend is going to open many opportunities for the future of colleges and students’ higher education pursuits. Education restricted to physically being present and spending large sums of money on tuition fees is now will soon seize as the only way of obtaining sound advanced education.

This in no way means that the education will be free of cost. Rather costs will start becoming itemized (i.e. testing and assessment fees, lectures and notes will be provided on a minimal fee scale as well). Though in turn, students will be protected against incurring huge debts from potentially irreparable astronomical tuition fees. Money and education will no longer be an issue for the less privileged and poverty ridden who want to pursue their education but are restricted. Regarding grading, diplomas, and certification of education, students will be assessed based on open grading systems (already emerging and employed in conventional collegiate settings), which will serve as indication of student performance for interested employers and gatekeepers.

The rise of the virtual education system and the new digital learning environment will change the dynamics and perceptions of higher studies and the future of colleges in the coming years. The elements that the virtual learning system will lack is the luxury of physical classrooms, libraries, departments, college campuses,lecture halls and the social scene that accompanies it. This will certainly bring a revolution to the future of college and learning, but will prove to be a valuable and popular approach for many.
